The parka was originally developed in the late 1940s for US military use because of its practical hardwearing properties. In different forms it has become a symbol of Mod and Indie subcultures as well as later associations with the ‘uncool’. Parkas were hugely popular for boys at school and are now considered vintage collectibles.

It was not common for young girls to carry bags until the 1950s. Instead small items such as a handkerchief were kept in concealed pockets or stowed in a muff. This bag was made in America. Its stylised shape and applied white felt decoration is typical of 1950s styles.
Must-have Toys
An exhibition for all generations: everyone remembers their must-have toy. Favourite toys from the last 100 years came together for the first time in the most comprehensive collection of desirable toys ever seen in Britain. Must-have Toys featured classics from Meccano, to the Spacehopper, to Beyblades.
'Playful children are happier, better adjusted, more co-operative, and more popular with their peers than those who play less. Children play longer when a wide variety of toys is available'.

Toys play a central role in all our lives, as children and as adults. This exhibition explored some of the most iconic toys from the last 100 years including many of those awarded 'toy of the year'.

Dreams of Flying
Crossing the desert on the back of a dog, or searching for lost treasures on the bottom of the ocean. Jan von Holleben's photographs allow children to make their dreams come true.
Jan brings the influences of his parents - a photographer and child therapist - to his work. Inspired by classic childhood books as well as modern superheroes, he made Dreams of Flying over the last four years with children from his local neighbourhood in South West Germany. It is Jan's most acclaimed photographic project to date and has won several prestigious awards. This is his first solo exhibition in London.
Paddington Bear, Teddy bear
Teddy bears are everyone's favourite toy - a part of childhood we often hang on to even as adults. This exhibition celebrated our undiminished affection for teddy bears and was staged to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the teddy bear, including many historic bears from the Museum's own collection.
This exhibition also appeared at Liverpool Museum.
Elephant carriage pull-along toy, Toys from India
Beautiful, handmade toys and games from India were displayed at the Museum in this colourful exhibition. A selection of contemporary toys were acquired in India, directly from the makers at the Dilli Haat Bazaar in New Delhi. They represented the playthings of millions of Indian children past and present, and provided an insight into the vital role that craft plays in India today. Historic toys from the Museum's collection highlighted the fine craftmanship achieved in traditional toy making in India and offered a comparison with modern toys.
The roots of all craft traditions are based in social, cultural, or religious customs. Craft is an important economic activity and the second largest employment sector after agriculture in India.
Many agricultural and pastoral communities depend on their traditional craft skills as a secondary source of income in times of drought, lean harvests, floods or famine. Dilli Haat is run by Dastkar, an organisation which promotes traditional crafts and helps develop the self-sufficiency of craftspeople and craft communities.
This exhibition was supported by the Helen Hamlyn Trust and Shisha, the international agency for contemporary South Asian crafts and visual arts, working in collaboration with Dastkar. For more information see touring exhibitions.
